CNC Bending

CNC Bending

Accurate, repeatable bends - angle after angle, batch after batch.
CNC press braking forms sheet metal into precise angles and profiles with computer-controlled repeatability across every batch.

Overview

CNC bending uses programmed control to set positioning and bend angle precisely, forming flat sheet into V-shapes, U-shapes and multi-segment geometries. Unlike die bending in a press, it requires no expensive dedicated tooling and offers fast changeover; with springback compensation it delivers accurate, repeatable angles, making it ideal for high-mix, low-volume and large sheet metal parts.

How the Process Works

01/

Plan the bending sequence and calculate springback compensation, which varies with sheet thickness, material and angle

02/

Select the V-die opening according to sheet thickness; the bend angle and material determine the die profile; enter the angle, positioning and pressure parameters into the program

03/

Trial-bend the first article and measure the angle; correct any deviation through the program, and only proceed to volume production once it passes.

04/

CNC automatically positions and bends each part for batch consistency (accurate, repeatable angles); first / middle / last inspections are carried out to prevent die wear or positioning drift.

05/

Sampling inspection of angles and dimensions, with particular attention to the critical angles confirmed on the first article

06/

Accepted parts proceed to welding / surface finishing

Key Advantages

  • Accurate, repeatable angles - CNC controlled, consistent from batch to batch
  • Uniform profile - consistent bend profiles and batch-to-batch repeatability for stable volume production
  • Fast changeover - simply change the program and tooling; suits high-mix, low-volume production
  • Springback compensation - pre-compensated in the program to correct springback error
  • Large parts possible - long press brake beds handle the bending of large panels

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: 1.What bending accuracy can you achieve?

A: CNC controlled, with accurate repeatable angles and uniform batch profiles; the specific tolerance depends on the machine and sheet thickness.

Q: 2.How do you handle springback?

A: Springback is a property of the metal and is solved by process compensation: pre-compensated die angles plus program correction.

Q: 3.How thick and how long a sheet can you bend?

A: Thickness depends on press brake tonnage; length depends on the bed size.

Q: 4.Will the material crack when bent?

A: It depends on material, thickness and bend radius. Thick plate, high-strength steel and aluminium are prone to cracking if the bend radius is too small - this is assessed during process design.

Q: 5. Do you need dedicated tooling?

A: Bending mainly uses standard V-dies, so there is normally no expensive dedicated tooling and changeover costs are low.

Q: 6.How do I choose between CNC bending and die bending?

A: For high-volume bending of identical parts, use a stamping die; for high-mix, low-volume and large parts, use CNC bending.
