The Development History of Metal Stamping

Jun 11, 2026 Leave a message

With the advent of the Industrial Revolution, human-powered machines were replaced by steam power.

In 1999, international steel giants developed hot-stamped steel with aluminum-silicon coating technology, and in 2006, they invented the product technology for hot-stamped steel with aluminum-silicon coating. From 2017 to the present, the team at the State Key Laboratory of Rolling Technology and Continuous Rolling Automation at Northeastern University in China has developed a series of new high-toughness hot-stamped steel products with aluminum-silicon coating, boasting a full strength range of 1000-2200MPa, with independent intellectual property rights. This has broken the foreign technological monopoly, and mass production began in 2021, with applications expected to exceed 1 million vehicles by 2024.

In the automotive manufacturing sector, modern automakers such as Tesla have driven the development of "sheet metal stamping integrated forming" technology. This technology, with its advantages of automation, high precision, and high efficiency, has almost completely changed the assembly process of automobile production lines, which has existed for over 100 years.

Currently, metal stamping technology is still evolving. For example, between 2025 and 2026, the industry has achieved new patent results in areas such as composite aluminum foil for cold stamping (such as the patent of Yangzhou Jirui Company) and ball head punches for one-piece flanging and punching (such as the patent of Magna Company), aiming to further improve product qualification rate, optimize processes and reduce costs.
