Metal Stamping Process Definition

Jul 10, 2026 Leave a message

Metal stamping (also known as cold stamping) is a processing method in which vertical pressure is applied to a metal sheet by a stamping machine, causing it to undergo plastic deformation inside a mold . This process does not require external heating and is a typical cold working technique.

The history of metal stamping can be traced back to the principle of coin casting by the Lydians in the 7th century BC. They made molds with patterns, covered the corresponding metal (usually gold or gold-silver alloys), and then struck it with a heavy hammer to imprint the pattern on the coin. Until around 1550, the manual hammering method was changed, and the silversmith Marx Schwab invented a coin-pressing machine, but it still required manual operation .
